Have peace of mind in your own home with Dropcam

Now that I am a parent of two little boys, I understand the need to have peace of mind when it comes to my home.  Whether we are away on vacation and I want to ensure our home has not been broken into, or I just want to keep an eye on my boys as they play in another room, Dropcam offers just that.

The original Dropcam was developed as cloud-based Wi-Fi video monitoring with free streaming.  With 2-way talk and remote viewing via Wi-Fi, this camera adds security to your home, at a price that you previously only dreamed of.  The Dropcam Pro was recently introduced with slightly better viewing angles, zoom, better low-light vision and spectacular audio quality.  Another added feature of the Dropcam Pro is the ability to set it up via iOS devices.

I was recently given the opportunity to review the Dropcam Pro for our 2013 Holiday Gift Guide.  Set up was very easy and I was able to do it right there in my kitchen with my iPhone.  I didn’t even have to call my husband for help!  The Dropcam app is free to download and has a simple interface.  Once you have followed the directions and you have created a username/password, the camera is ready to go!  The camera is only viewable by those who have access to the username and password, so you don’t have to worry about just anyone viewing it.

Although you cannot pan or tilt the camera as I am used to with our baby monitors, it has a decently wide field of view that makes up for it.  The video is choppy when you first connect but gets much clearer and smooth after the connection has been established a while.  In the photo below, my son would not stop bouncing his head to music we had playing the background so he was a bit blurry when I took a screen shot.

Want to be stealthy in your video monitoring?  Simply visit the settings and turn off the status light.  You can control alerts on your device for motion, noise or the camera being offline.  When my camera is offline for 30+ minutes, I receive an email notifying me of this.  If my kids accidentally unplug the camera (or an intruder does so), you will know even if you are not viewing the live feed.

The Dropcam and Dropcam Pro are great cameras to monitor your home.  I can’t think of anything better to give someone for Christmas than added security!
