When I was a kid, I lugged around my camera while on vacation. It was in a bulky case with spare film and batteries. Then came the awesomeness of digital cameras…boy did I think I was cool when I bought that $200 digital point and shoot with a big 1 GB SD card! That was outdated within the year. Now we can pull our smart phone from our pocket, snap a photo of the family, and send it across the world, all in a matter of seconds. We can pay for more data if we run out, but what about when our battery dies? Then we’re just out of luck… or are we?
You may have seen some of my reviews of power banks in the past. I thought those were the next best thing since sliced bread (ok, maybe that’s an exaggeration) but I was wrong – there is something even better! OtterBox and LifeProof have exceeded my expectations and created battery cases. These cases are of great quality and by far my favorites on the market!
I’ve always kept my phone in a durable, protective case. Ok, well that started after I learned the hard way that it was necessary. I have a 2 1/2 year old and a 4 year old who can get a little crazy. One minute my phone is in my pocket, and the next, someone is running away giggling with it. I don’t have to tell you that kids at that age aren’t the most gentle on technology. I’ve tried a variety of iPhone cases over the past 8 years of but OtterBox and LifeProof are consistently my lifelines. For this review I put the Lifeproof FRE Power and the Otterbox Resurgence cases to the test.
The newest iPhone 6 case by LifeProof is the FRE Power. I cannot find words to explain how amazing this case is! My phone is protected from the elements AND has an additional 2600 mAh battery. The phone itself only has 1810 mAh so this more than doubles the phone’s battery life! I expected the case to be heavy and bulky, but it is hardly bigger than the original iPhone 6 FRE I previously reviewed.
As with any LifeProof case, you can expect top notch protection. The FRE Power is waterproof, dirt proof, snow proof, and shock proof. The built in scratch protector keeps keys or sand from scratching the screen. Fear not if you use the fingerprint scanner – it will still work seamlessly. One noticeable improvement over the original FRE is the Sound Enhancement System. Music sounds better than ever with the case on! Ok, enough with the normal expectancies of the LifeProof case though…let’s get back to talking about that battery.
So you’ve got 2X the power now, but how easy is it to actually put on and use? How easy is it to charge the case? Do I have to remove it every time I need to charge the case? Can I still sync my phone with it? The answers are easy, easy, no, yes. The case is very easy to use – simply slide your phone into the case’s lightning adapter, snap on the front case, screw in the headphone protector, and close the power port. Once it is on, hold the button on the back for a few seconds and let go to begin charging. Repeat to end charging. To check battery power, just press and release once. To charge the case, open the charging port on the bottom as you would with any LifeProof case, and plug in a micro USB cable (included). Both the case and the phone will begin charging immediately. And yes, you can sync your phone when plugged in via the micro USB port.
LifeProof’s FRE Power case is absolutely perfect for summer vacation! I have already used mine to take photos while the kids splashed me in the pool, while high on a ferris wheel, out in the garden, on a road trip, and so much more…and I’m just a stay at home mom. Imagine the potential this case could have for you this summer!
Now let’s talk about the OtterBox Resurgence case for iPhone 6. This case is equally amazing, with slightly different preferences in mind. Also with a 2600 mAh battery, you will not be left without power by the end of the day. Hanging out with friends reminiscing your past, road trips to that place you’ve always dreamed of seeing, or simply a long day outside at the park, you will have plenty of power to take photos, videos, browse the internet, listen to music, etc. You name it. I am often a heavy user of my iPhone and have not yet drained the Resurgence case + my iPhone 6 in one day. That’s after hours of my boys taking turns playing games or watching videos, listening to music while we clean house, me sneaking in to catch up on some blog work and social media, my husband snatching it for a phone call when his battery is low, and the usual parental tasks of keeping up on phone calls for appointments. Plus, I take way too many photos and videos of my kids, on a daily basis. I use to drain my phone battery just from that!
The design of the Resurgence is sturdy and provides military grade protection, but does not feature a built in screen protector as found in the FRE case. It is easy to slide the phone into the lightning adapter and snap the cover on. On the side of the case you’ll find a small rubber piece that opens to reveal a micro USB port (cable included) for charging both the case and your phone as well as syncing to the computer. On the back is an LED light to indicate the level of charge remaining. Press the button for a few seconds to begin or end charging, and once quickly to reveal the charge remaining.
Both the LifeProof FRE Power and OtterBox Resurgence provide high-speed charging that automatically stops when the phone battery reaches 100% to preserve the rest of the power. I am thankful for that because my kids have a tendency to check out that fun little button on the back with all the lights. While I favor the FRE Power for its waterproof protection, the Resurgence is clearly a protective case that I recommend for those seeking out a slightly sleeker case. Both cases are available in a variety of colors to fit your preference.
So what do you think? Will it be the LifeProof FRE Power or the OtterBox Resurgence case for your iPhone 6? Don’t go on your summer vacation without one!
