Review: Little Tikes Backyard Barbecue Get Out ‘n’ Grill

Little Tikes Get Out N Grill BBQ Toy for Toddlers Review

It’s summer, and the warm weather is getting everyone out grilling or going to cook outs with the family.  With their natural curiosity and tendency to copy what mommy and daddy do, some parents spend most of their time at cookouts keeping the kids away from dangerous items like utensils and hot grills.  The Little Tikes Backyard Barbeque Get Out ‘n’ Grill allows the kids to grill up their own burgers and hot dogs just like mommy and daddy, keeping them safely away from the real thing.

When I first received the grill it was nicely packaged in the box from Little Tikes, with all the required parts tucked inside the grill’s storage compartment.  Assembly took maybe fifteen minutes, including careful placement of the stickers and a double check to make sure I didn’t miss anything – there were spare parts included just in case! (I hope they were extra, at least)

The kit includes an outdoor toy grill with openable cover, a wash sink on the left and a side burner on the right.  The side burner has two pegs on the front to hold the included spatula and tongs, along with a cute burner cover and clicking dial.  There are two clicking dials on the front and one igniter button just like mommy and daddy’s grill, and two shelves in the grill, so he gets a hot dog shelf too!  Also included are a hot dog and bun, hamburger with bun, and a ketchup bottle.  More accessories and foods are available in other kits or separately.

The grill is sturdy, and my two year old spent literally his entire Saturday playing with the grill, except for an excursion to the store and park.  He loves it, though I don’t think Pooh Bear appreciated being cooked on the grill…  I was surprised how much he liked it, but after playing with it for just a few seconds he found a frustration that I have to share.  He knows how faucets work, so he was rather disappointed when he tried to turn, move, or lift the handle of the faucet on the rinse sink, only to find that it was one solid, non-moving piece.  He took a few minutes trying to force it to move before being frustrated and giving up to play with the grill.  I’m not sure why the faucet is not movable, since I’ve seen many other play faucets that function.

Other than the faucet, I have nothing but good things to say about the Backyard Barbecue Get Out ‘n’ Grill, and plan to buy new foods for the boys to play with on it soon.  And an added bonus for those of you with smaller children, none of the parts were too small to keep out around my 8 month old.   Just remember, if you put this outside keep it a good distance from your real grill so the kids avoid the smoke and potential burns.
