Recycle your electronics

Each year, the months leading up to the holidays are a great time for the family to get rid of old, outdated products and make space for the new ones bound to appear when presents arrive.  It can be difficult to part with the old products, but we don’t want to end up on an episode of Hoarders, do we?  And one of the worst culprits these days are our electronics.  They’re great, but they are outdated faster than almost anything else we buy.  As you upgrade to a new phone, computer, video game system, or even from CDs to digital and DVDs to Blu-Ray, don’t just let the old items sit around collecting dust!

One option is to sell your items online, using an auction or classified site like eBay or Craigslist.  Don’t want to deal with the hassle, listing fees, or meeting up with strangers?  Try an online service, where you simply send in your old DVDs, CDs, and video games and get cash back.  If you can’t find a buyer, or you just want the old stuff gone NOW, look for an electronic recycler near you.  Many stores, such as Best Buy, have electronics recycling programs to safely dispose of old cell phones and other items.  Many devices with screens or batteries require proper disposal due to mercury or other potentially dangerous parts, and these retailers will ensure they are properly taken care of.

Leading up to the holidays there are also often programs that will take your electronics, refurbish them, and give them to families in need.  What a great way to get rid of your old devices and help another family who otherwise couldn’t have a phone or computer at all!  So this holiday season, get rid of those old products that are just taking up space, and get a little cash to spend on gifts or help a brighten another family’s season!
