Review: Petmate Suede/Terry Pillow Bed with Microban

My dogs are spoiled and they know it!  If there is a pillow, couch cushion, my son’s Boppy or blanket bunched up for them to lay on, they are on it in an instant!  With my husband and I, our 1 year old son, another baby on the way, and two dogs, sometimes the couch gets a little over-crowded in the evenings.  Petmate sent me a Suede/Terry Pillow Bed to review and we all love it!

Product features

  • Microban Antimicrobial product protection
  • Suede bottom panel with plush micro terry top
  • Zippered removable cover – machine washable
  • 36” x 45”

When I first opened the package from Petmate, I noticed that the caramel color sent to me is absolutely perfect for us!  My dogs are both tan colored and shed like crazy.  The pillow is suede on the bottom and plush terry on top which is even soft enough for my 1 year old to climb on and cuddle with the dogs.  Cool enough on one side in summer, the other side will be warm in the winter.

Occasionally we get a spill around here – there is not much avoiding that with a 1 year old in the house.  The pillow case being easily removable and washable is definitely a life saver for us.  Microban will also help to prevent bacteria from living and growing on the pillow – another important feature for our family needs!

The pillow is 36″ x 45″ – perfect for both my dogs with plenty of space for them to stretch out. All but the largest of dogs will fit on this pillow with no problem.  Occasionally my son even brings his Boppy pillow up and joins them for a quick cuddle…or he leaves it and they curl up in it, even on top of the pillow.  The size of the pillow was the biggest surprise, and a good one at that. There is enough room for both dogs to enjoy it but not feel crowded or possessive of the pillow.

Overall, we really like the Petmate Suede/Terry Pillow Bed.  The bed is a great fit for our needs and I would definitely recommend it.  I have not found a single feature that I do not like.  My dogs seem pretty happy with the bed and will continue to use it for years to come!

Where to purchase

Firework Safety Tips for Dogs

Firework Safety Tips for Dogs
Guest post written by Lisa Carey

With the 4th of July approaching, many of us may be looking forward to enjoying a brilliant display of fireworks at a local park or possibly even shooting off some near our own homes.   Wherever you are enjoying the fireworks there is one important thing to remember; “fireworks and dogs don’t mix.”

I don’t know what it is.  Could it be the loud booms and pops?  The echoing sound?  A level of sound that is only detectable to a dog?  Whatever it is dogs simply don’t like fireworks.  One dog spends the entire evening barking, while the other whines unless he is close to a family member.  Use this simple tips to make your family and your dog that much more comfortable during this special holiday celebration.

1.  Going to the park?  This is one time it’s best to leave your dog at home.  Not only can your dog get lost in the crowd, they won’t enjoy the noise of the fireworks but add the excitement of the celebration and you may be creating a recipe for doggy disaster.

2.  Firing fireworks at home?   Make sure that your pet is carefully controlled inside the house avoiding dangers of burns or accidents.

3.  Simply spending a quiet evening at home?  Keep your dog inside with you.  Dogs left outside could be injured by a stray firework or still hot spot on one that lands in your yard. (Yes, where I live private citizens can shoot off fireworks – except this year during a burn ban.) Another danger with your dog being outside is that they become too excited, over heated or even successfully attempt a “get away” not from the noise but from your backyard.  In the house, keep your pet in an interior room and play music or have a television on to mute the noise of fireworks.

4.  Make sure that your dog’s tags are up to date with information and hopefully they are micro chipped. This way should you take your dog out and about with you and become separated they can be as easily found, as they were lost.

5.  The heat and noise are not the only dangers to your dog.  The chemicals used in fireworks are toxic and according to  Dr. Justine Lee, DVM, DAVECC, Associate Director of Veterinary Services at Pet Poison Helpline ““If ingested, fireworks can cause gastrointestinal signs like vomiting, a painful abdomen, and even bloody diarrhea.”  “In severe cases, tremors or seizures can be seen, along with acute kidney failure, jaundice (yellowing of the skin), bone marrow changes and shallow breathing. If dermal exposure has occurred, then burns to the nose, face, lips, or inside of the mouth may be seen, due to the curious nature of our pets. Eye irritation or conjunctivitis can also occur from the chemicals and the secondary smoke,” he continues.

6.  Place the contact information for your vet, an emergency veterinarian and the Pet Poison Hotline where you can easily find it.  In my house that means next to the phone or on the fridge.  This way in the event of an emergency you can quickly get your pet the help they need.

7.  If you, like our family, know that your dog may need a little extra help staying calm during fireworks, contact your veterinarian in advance and get a sedative.  Sedatives for people cannot be used and may even do more harm than good to your pet.

8.  Clean up clean up, everybody everywhere.  After the party is over make sure that all the trash, fireworks, foods and other items are carefully disposed of. Dogs love trash cans! Check the lawn for stray poppers and any other items that may have landed.

During this special holiday season, fireworks are not the only danger. Make sure gates are properly secured as it’s easy during a party to lose one of your “guests” including the four legged variety. Keep lighter fluid, matches, charcoal, sunscreen, citronella and other BBQ and outdoor party supplies away from your pets and make sure that they are properly hydrated during our hot holiday season.  Make sure guests know not to feed Fido or Fee Fee. At one party, we quickly had to stop a guest from giving out pet a chocolate brownie!

As tempting as it may be to make your 4th of July fireworks a family event, this is one instance where you can make sure that for your dog, “There is no place like home.”

Review: Chewy.com

My dogs are spoiled and I’m pretty sure they have no idea how good they have it.  They lay on the couch all day, play in the yard, get tons of cuddles and have me at home all day to keep them company.  The worse thing they ever have to deal with is my 1 year old chasing them around.  They are great dogs and I like to make sure they know that by giving them treats and healthy dog food.  I honestly like shopping online better than in stores – my son doesn’t get unhappy sitting in the cart and I can usually find better deals on a wider variety of pet products.  I recently came across Chewy.com (formerly Mr. Chewy) and found that they have just about every thing I need when it comes to giving my dogs treats or food.  Chewy.com carries 100+ brands pet products including dog and cat food, treats, and other supplies with brands including Frontline, Blue Buffalo, Pedigree, Greenies, Fresh Step and tons more.

Chewy.com is extremely easy to navigate. You can either search for the pet product or brand you want or use their navigation at the top to view dog treats, dog food, potty pads, and more.  As I looked around for brands I was familiar with, I noticed the prices are comparable to those of the stores I normally shop at in my area.  My dogs are small/medium sized dogs (both under 20lbs) and I normally get them dog food with small bites.  I found the Pedigree Small Breed Adult Dry Dog Food that we get our dogs and it was the same price as I normally pay… but I could have it shipped to my door!  Being pregnant and having a 1 year old, it is so much easier to have the dog food delivered straight to my porch and let my husband bring it in rather than go shopping, try to fit it in the cart with everything else and struggle to put it in the car.

I also looked at the dog treats – WOW I had no idea there were so many brands or types!  I ordered a package of Beggin’ Strips since my dogs have never tried those (but they LOVE bacon!) and two packages of Bil Jac Gooberlicious Dog Training Treats.  I love the small treats so they can have them more often without gaining the extra weight.  I had never heard of Bil Jac but there were 100 treats in a package for just $2.99!!!

Chewy.com charges $4.95 flat rate shipping on orders under $49.  Shipping is free if you order $49 or more – which is so easy when you are ordering dog food!  After my 2 bags of dog food, 3 bags of treats, I was JUST BARELY under $49.  I added the Earth Rated PoopBags Dispenser with 15 bags as a filler to put me just over the $49 to get free shipping.  When you place your order, Chewy.com does ask you to create an account on their website incase you order pet products again – it makes the process so much faster next time.  I created my account, placed my order and it shipped out the next day!  About 4 days later, it arrived on my porch for my husband to bring inside :)  I had ordered some other things online the same day as I placed my Chewy.com order and I honestly expected the FedEx man to be bringing those – nope, my order just came that fast!  Very impressive!

If you are like me, you run out of things then have to make a last minute trip to the store.  They have a pet product subscription delivery-schedule that you can sign up for.  You set your own time frame and quantities and Chewy.com takes care of the rest.  You can cancel or change the schedule at any time.

Overall, I am pretty happy with them.  The pet products were reasonably priced, the shipping was very quick and the website is very easy to navigate.  I will definitely be keeping Chewy.com in my bookmarks as long as I have pets!
