Tips for shopping thrift & consignment stores

I discovered consignment and thrift shops in college when my husband and I were newlyweds.  Now that we have two little boys, saving money has been equally as important as it was then.  It took me a little while to get the most out of my shopping trips, but I finally have it down!  Here are a few tips and tricks I follow as I shop:

Make a list.  When trying to save money, there’s nothing worse than spending extra money on things you don’t need.  Make a list of the items you are in need of and colors to keep an eye out for (especially for home decor).  You will often find deals you have a hard time passing up, so remember your initial goal – to save money!

Visit often.  The selection changes on a daily basis at most secondhand stores.  And if you plan to go back for an item, don’t hold your breath because someone else may have picked it up already.

Keep an eye out for sales. Some of my local thrift stores have “color of the week” sales where the tags that match the color advertised are 50% off.  Another has a $0.69 sale on Saturdays, along with other unadvertised sales.  You can look up your stores’ phone numbers online or in a phone book and call ahead of time to find out what the sale is today.  Many stores often have a Facebook page or other social media they post their deals to…and even some of their favorite new items!

Price check.  I have occasionally found items priced at or higher than new retail price.  If you have a smart phone, you can Google the item to determine whether that seems to be a reasonable price or not.  Consignment stores also run higher prices than thrift stores so make sure you only pay the amount you are comfortable with.

Check the items!  Always check for stains, holes, missing pieces or other damage.  Sometimes employees miss something that could be detrimental to the product.

Stay open minded. If you can make simple changes to an item of clothing that doesn’t fit absolutely perfect, don’t toss it aside.  There are hundreds of ideas on Pinterest for upcycling, mending, or modifying clothing, furniture, or other odds and ins.  There are some amazing ideas out there!

Have patience!  The selection depends on the donations or consignors.  Maybe you didn’t find what you wanted today, but keep trying!  The organization of many secondhand stores is also difficult to get used to as a new shopper, as each item is different and you will have to thumb through clothing and take some time to look through.

Christmas has always been my favorite holiday, and as a parent, it has become even more amazing.    With all of the joy and magic surrounding the holiday, Christmas really is the best time to be a kid!

As I drove my children home from the grocery store a couple days ago, they were in awe at Christmas lights and decorations as we passed by.  It was almost as if they had never seen any before because the joy on their faces was unbelievable.  But even as we saw more, their excitement never faded.

One way we love to connect with the holidays is to dress up in fun holiday inspired outfits.  This year, Gymboree has a great holiday collection for your adorable little kiddos and you should definitely take a look to see what they have!  My favorite of course is the Gymboree Holiday Boy Collection – I can’t wait to head to the store and pick out some of my favorites to bring home!

LuLaRoe – friend or foe?

This solid purple Irma from LuLaRoe is gorgeous!

Hey everyone!  I’ve been a little quiet lately due to a recent move.  We are finally getting settled in and back into our normal routines but it has been a rough ride!  In the past few months though, I’ve come across LuLaRoe clothing.  I had heard of the brand before and thought “I love leggings but really, what could be the big deal?”

If you know me, you know I love shopping at thrift stores.  So it shouldn’t surprise you that my first piece of Lula was from Salvation Army of all places.  I found a pair of the popular LuLaRoe brand leggings and had to try them for myself.  A friend of mine had been raving about the brand and how amazingly soft everything was.  She was definitely right – the leggings were so soft!  And at $4, I couldn’t pass these up, even if they weren’t my favorite pattern.  I mean I love being comfy around the house anyways!

After a few times of wearing my new leggings, I talked to my friend and found out there is more to LuLaRoe than just these buttery soft leggings.  They have shirts, dresses, kimonos, skirts, cardigans.. and it is all known to be comfortable yet cute.  After spending a couple weeks browsing and entering giveaways, and messaging back and forth with a consultant, I got to try a few more pieces.

Now I’m hooked.  Yeah… at first I was ashamed but then I realized that I haven’t focused on a wardrobe for myself since before my kids were born.  I am starting to feel more confident and am building up a wardrobe for when I begin working again.  I feel great!  Fortunately I haven’t spent much, with my thrift store and giveaway luck, but you will want to make sure your pocketbook is ready for your shopping.  The pieces are more expensive than I am used to (as a thrift store shopper especially) but are not too outrageous.

Sizing can be tricky but my favorite thing is that each piece can be worn several ways.  If a shirt is too big, it will still be totally amazing with a cute knot!  Too hot for leggings?  Roll them under to be capris!

Life is too short to wear boring clothes - LuLaRoe

And patterns…oh the amazing variety of prints you will find!  The brand is known to make only 2,500 – 5,000 of each print (sometimes in different color variations) so it is often you will be unique, even at a huge LuLaRoe convention!

As you get to know LuLaRoe, you will learn a variety of terms.  OS (one size…leggings..), TC (tall & curvy…leggings), and Unicorn (hard to find item/print, or simply one you’d love to find).

If you are interested but don’t have a lot of money, you can offer to host a party for a consultant, either online or in-home.  After a certain number of items sell, you can receive rewards (free items, discounts, etc) that you pre-arrange and agree to with the consultant.

And if you aren’t interested in hosting a party, you will find thousands of LuLaRoe Facebook groups to shop and party with!  Giveaways are around every corner as well, for both new and loyal customers.

So LuLaRoe… friend or foe?  I say friend!  The brand has been amazing to me!

Head on over to my Facebook Group where I will soon be hosting parties, giveaways, and sharing some of my favorite pieces!
